Jacques Tati was a French movie director, actor, comedian. Most of his work was done between the late 30's and early 60's. He wasn't as physical as Buster Keaton, or as clowny as Chaplin. He had a dry humor and his movies were visually very clean and carefully constructed. They were also virtually silent in dialogue, but rich with sound effects. I found this post card at a store in Somerville. It's a promo still from Tati's movie "Jour De Fète" (1948). In the movie, he plays François, the bicycle mail delivery guy and does some wonderful physical comedy on that bike. The movie was originally released in black and white, but recently, a color version was released and I got to see it on the big screen. It's one of my favorite movies. Photo by Robert Doisneau. 1949. After Jour De Fète, Tati starred in the following films in his famous character, the bumbling and curious, Monsieur Hulot: Mr. Hulot's Holiday (1953), Mon Oncle (1958), Playtime (1967), Traffic (1971) Looking for more Tati Stuff? I know this page comes up high in certain search engines for people looking for info on Tati. Sorry it's not very much... just a little tribute! I get a lot of email from people looking for info on where to purchase Tati movies and posters. The single best place I've found on the web is ebay. If you're not familiar with Ebay; it's an online auction site where the winning bidder of an item gets to privately purchase the item from the seller. Ebay is just a 'middleman' who takes a cut from the seller, so all it costs you is your bid price, plus shipping. Most standard VHS Tati movies go for $5-$20 (US) and there are several up for bid at any given time. Posters vary wildly in price (and some are wildly overpriced!) but it's up to you to bid what you'll pay. Check out today's Tati items up for bid by clicking here. Keep going back if you're looking for a specific item, because new items are added daily. |
